Dog-friendly vacations that give back | thepupdiary.com

We love to travel. We also love to help animals in need. We found that combining these two passions was easy, fun, AND dog friendly. Check out two places we visited last year and hope for a repeat this year!

Glen Highland Farm
We have visited Glen Highland Farm each year for the past 3 years. Once you visit the dog-friendly camp in upstate New York, you’ll be hooked, too! Set on 175 acres of meadows, trails, wildlife, water, and beautiful views — this is an off-leash doggy paradise! Yes, we did say “off leash”! Pups are welcome to run and play off leash! Best of all, the camp supports the Sweet Border Collie Rescue that is run out of the main house and grounds. Humans are welcome to tour the rescue and meet the adoptable pups during their stay. Over 2,000 pups have found forever homes through the rescue group! The 2014 camp season is open May 23 to September 30. Book early to get the dates and accommodations you would like! They offer tents, cabins, and RVs for your 2-night minimum stay. Glen Highland Farm is about a 4-hour drive from NYC.
(Side trips: We went out for dog-friendly ice cream, visited Cooperstown, and checked out a dog-friendly brewery — all an easy drive from the camp.)

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary
We visited Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT last summer and LOVED it! We stayed in an Angel Canyon cottage overlooking their horse pasture and surrounded by beautiful nature. Book early because these cabins and cottages are in high demand! Visiting pups are welcome in the accommodations, the visitor center, and the tour bus with preapproved reservations. Visiting pups are not allowed in the adoption centers or grounds. As the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary houses hundreds of animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, horses, birds. Mom toured the grounds and visited Dogtown and Cat World. People are able to sign up to volunteer in different areas. It really is a magical place!!
(Side trips: We visited Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and the Coral Pink Sand Dunes! The area is the Golden Circle of national parks with many beautiful and dog-friendly stops!)

5 dog-friendly places to visit on Presidents’ Day | thepupdiary.com

Today we celebrate George Washington’s birthday! It’s also a day to celebrate and remember all presidents. Lucky for us, there are many dog-friendly places we can visit to learn about the presidents and the history of our country.

Washington, DC – We love to visit the DC area! We can frolic on the National Mall, take a dog-friendly river cruise, see the FDR Memorial up close, visit a winery, and so much more! Read the post on our recent trip to dog-friendly Washington, DC.

FDR Memorial

Arlington National Cemetery – Such a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. Leashed pups are welcome to tour the grounds, too! See the final resting place for JFK.

Mount Vernon: A trip to the Washington, DC area would not be complete without a visit to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, 15 miles south of the city. Leashed dogs are welcome to tour the grounds during daytime visiting hours.

Monticello: Leashed dogs are welcome on Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello grounds, too!

Home of Franklin D Roosevelt: This is a beautiful area to visit about 90 miles north of NYC in Hyde Park. We toured the estate grounds including the beautiful rose gardens!

Mount Rushmore: Dogs are NOT allowed inside Mount Rushmore Memorial park. Leashed pups are welcome outside the park with a very distant view of the monument. We stopped at Mount Rushmore on a cross-country trip 2 years ago!

Visiting JFK’s final resting place | thepupdiary.com

The 624 acre cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery, is dog friendly. We headed there on a dreary day to take a long walk and visit gravesites. On this 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, we remember our walk in the rain and the prayer our mom said at his gravesite. Over 400,000 American servicemen and famous Americans are buried at the cemetery. The cemetery is open year round and well-behaved and leashed pups are invited to walk the grounds. It’s a beautiful place to visit if you tour the Washington, DC area.

Making biscuits with a Le Cordon Bleu chef | thepupdiary.com

It’s not every day that we get to make doggy biscuits with a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef! Well, truth be told, we weren’t even invited! But mom got to take a doggy biscuit class this past weekend at The Essex Resort & Spa and her teacher was a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef! The class was part of the resort’s Top Dog Weekend of fun!

Mom realized that making dog biscuits is not only very easy and fun, but also very inexpensive! And we love to save money whenever we can! We figured that each batch of the basic biscuits would yield about 3 dozen treats and cost less than $2 to make. Best of all, we actually love the biscuits and we tend to be picky treat eaters. The chef said that the added brewer’s yeast makes the biscuits extra special and appealing to us. All we have to say is YUM!

Basic Biscuits
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup chicken broth – low sodium
1/2 cup brewer’s yeast
3 tablespoons oil
1 to 2 teaspoons water if needed
Mix all ingredients in a bowl to form a dough. Roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Use 2 or 3 inch cookie cutters to cut into shapes. Bake at 350 degrees on parchment lined pan for about 40 minutes. Let cool completely before storing. Store in airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
