Dogs of New York – Sisu the Afghan Hound | thepupdiary.com

1 Jun

We met Sisu the Afghan Hound at the New Yorkie Runway show this past February where he was crowned Best in Show. These days the handsome pup is helping his mom, Laura Diaz, with her new Yappy Treats Cart doggy frozen yogurt business. The cart debuted in Central Park last weekend to lots of barks and tongue licks. We have sampled the dogfroyo and it is delicious! (And all-natural, too!) Follow @YappyTreatsCart on Twitter to find the cart. They also participate in many special events benefiting shelters and rescue groups including the upcoming Bideawee Take a Sip and Save a Life wine event on June 5 at 67 Wine.

We are happy to introduce you to Sisu!

Where are you from? I was born in Helsinki, Finland

How did you get your name? I was one of twelve in my litter so there was a lot of competition. Because I emerged as the leader of my pack, my dad named me ‘Sisu’. ‘Sisu’ (pronounced Seesoo) is a Finish term often described as integral to understanding the Finnish culture. It has been loosely translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity.

What is your hood? Upper West Side

Fave dog-friendly NY spot? Definitely Amsterdam Ale House. They got the best beer and dog treats. It’s like Cheers, everybody knows my name.

Fave day trip from NY? I love riding in my dad’s truck. It doesn’t matter where we are going, as long as I can rest my muzzle on an open window and inhale.

Do you have any pet peeves? My half brother, Merlin, a crazy Weimaraner. He can be very annoying.

Human peeves? Having to move when my dad is trying to vacuum. Usually I pretend like I am sleeping and have him vacuum around him. Check out “Sisu and the vacuum cleaner” on YouTube to see what I mean!

What do you like to eat? I have a diverse palate when it comes to food; Japanese sushi, Mexican tamales, Thai noodles, etc., but admittedly my vice is pizza.

What do you think of your mom’s new Yappy Treats Cart? I was very happy with my mom making healthy doggie ice cream, until she starting giving it to other dogs. Now I have to guard the cart to make sure no one takes my stash.

If you could break biscuits with any doggy (past or present) who would that be? International Champion Afghan Hound from my kennel, Wild West.

Any famous humans you would like to meet? I have a picture with Jerry Stiller, which is pretty cool. He lives in my hood. No disrespect to Jerry but I have a soft spot for pretty ladies. I would not wash the spot on my head if Catherine Zeta Jones were to pet me.

Birthday suit or dressed to the K-nines? Look, I carry a winter coat all year round. That’s enough for me. But I have my own collection of snoods. I have ones for my favorite sports teams, but I like my Harley Davidson snood the best. I also have an Angel on A Leash snood for my important work as a therapy dog.

Any new doggy products you can recommend? My mom’s Dogfroyo, of course! I watch her make it and it’s oh!… so good!

What’s in your doggy bag? My hair brush, a snood, and a couple of dollars to buy ice cream.

Favorite doggy charity? I don’t have one but if I had to choose I would give my bones to those Grey Hound rescues. They are way too thin.

Any human charities you like to support? Unicef because it focuses on children and let’s face it, I am a kid trapped in a dog’s body.

What is one thing other pups probably don’t know about you? A lot of pups are intimidated about my size but what they don’t know is that I am really skinny under all this hair. They should see me after a bath.

Upcoming summer plans? Marking the neighborhood, meeting bitches and keeping cool!

Q. How did you get your name?
A. My real name is Natasha but my friends call me Tasha, for short. I am named after one of my Mom’s favorite actresses, Natalie Wood – whose real name is Natasha Gurdin.

What neighborhood do you call home?
I live in Hell’s Kitchen, a neighborhood of Manhattan – that actually makes me neighbors with Cubby and Ginger!!

Favorite dog-friendly NYC spot?
My favorite dog-friendly NYC spot is definitely Shake Shack!! They have yummy hamburgers that Mom shares with me – and we have a lot of Pup Scout meetings there, so it’s always a fun time! Tribeca Grand Lounge is a very chic place to go, too.

Favorite day trip from NYC?
I actually haven’t been out of NY that much, unless it’s far away, I’ve been on lots of planes – but a day trip, hmmmm, does Brooklyn count? I love Coney Island – they have the best hot dogs!

Do you have any pet peeves?
Oh yes – my pet peeve is being forced to ride in a car!! I hate cars! I pant and shake the entire ride! But what Mom thinks is funny is that I love the subway and buses! BOL I guess I’m just a city girl at heart!

Human peeves?
When humans use that vacuum thing – that’s the only time you’ll hear me bark! I hate vacuums!!

What do you like to eat?
I eat Artemis dry food and Stella & Chewy’s and Natural Balance – but I REALLY like to eat turkey and vanilla ice cream!!!!!!

If you could break bread with any doggy (past or present) who would that be?
I would love to break bread with Freeway, from “Hart to Hart” – Mom watches the DVDs of that show and Freeway is one cool dude!

Any famous humans you would like to meet?
I’ve been pretty lucky with meeting some great actresses, because my Mom is in the business. She’s introduced me to dog loving, Broadway legends Chita Rivera and Bernadette Peters and wonderful actress, Valerie Harper – who is the person who told Mom, years ago, that she should get a dog, so she got me!

Birthday suit or dressed to the K-nines?
Dressed to the K-nines of course!! I wouldn’t feel right walking around naked! BOL

Designer duds or off the rack?
Designer Duds!! I started with off the rack, as a puppy – but once you start with designer duds, there’s no going back!

Favorite doggy charity?
I love Yorkie 911 Rescue, not just because I’m half Yorkie, they help lots of doggies besides Yorkies.
I also like Celebrity Catwalk and Broadway Barks! Too hard to pick just one Favorite doggy charity.

What is one thing other pups probably don’t know about you?
That I’m engaged!! BOL Just kidding – everyone knows that already! BOL
But maybe they didn’t know that my real name is Natasha. Or that I have a stroller that I’ve never used! (Maybe this will shame Mom into using it!)

Upcoming summer plans?
OMD, so many plans! After Blog Paws, we have ZZ and Pebbles Disco Party, then Yorkie 911 Fundraiser, then Dexter and Zoes wedding in CT – then I want to visit Gramma & Grampa in NH – I am going to be one busy doggie this summer!

Any new doggy products you can recommend?
We just found Dawn Diesler’s new line of dog carriers, Bespoke Canine!! They are so lightweight and pretty – and the best part is the inter-changeable handles, to match ALL our outfits! So cool!

Thank you so much, Tasha, for being a great doggy to interview!!  We will watch you on Spoiled Rotten Pets this Saturday, April 20 at 9 pm!!

Dogs of New York – Adoptable Dogs | thepupdiary.com

16 Apr

We would love to feature some Dogs of New York on our Pup Diary blog – our friends, dogs we meet, celebrity dogs, and of course, Adoptable Dogs!  We were both adopted from shelters, so it is only fitting that we start with doggies looking for homes!

Best Friends Animal Society Event

Where to find Adoptable Dogs in New York

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals is a great resource!  They list contact information for rescue groups and shelters.  We luv Animal Haven Shelter – Cubby’s first home before she was adopted.

The City shelter – Animal Care & Control – can’t turn away any animals, so they always have more dogs than they can care for.  Visit their Care Centers to adopt a pup!

Petfinder.com is a great source to search for a particular size or breed of dog.  Over 13,000 rescue groups have animals listed with Petfinder!

Breed-specific rescue groups are often run by volunteers who love the breed!  We work for Yorkie 911 Rescue doing home visits and occasionally fostering.  If you are looking for a specific breed, check to see if they have a rescue group.  In NY, we know there are groups for Pugs, Westies, Shibas . . . The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals has a network of breed rescue groups.

Head to adoption events!  We love the Best Friends Animal Society Pet Super Adoption event — this year on April 26-28 at Westchester County Center.  We have volunteered at this event the past two years and we have seen just about every breed of dog for adoption!  Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days will be held in NYC on June 1 and 2.

We know folks who have found adoptable pups on Craigslist, too.

Follow blogs like That Touch of Pit where adoptable dogs are often listed.

And remember, you can always become a foster parent before you adopt.  We luv Foster Dogs NYC

And finally – get active!  Many events showcase pups or are great places to network to learn about pups!
