Howl-O-Ween fun begins | thepupdiary.com

Last night we went to our first Halloween party of the season! Stonehenge NYC decorated the plaza next to their Hell’s Kitchen residential tower and had a doggy costume contest with some tricks and some treats! The event raised money for Bideawee shelter animals. (Check the calendar to see other upcoming events.)

This is one of our fave times of the year! We love the beautiful fall weather and we also love all of the outdoor activities. There are dozens of doggy Halloween parties in the New York City area this year! We need to get busy and make some costumes! Last night we wore our birthday suits … And we were even outdressed by two cats!

This past weekend we participated in the 4th annual NYC Strut Your Mutt doggy walk hosted by Best Friends Animal Society. It’s one of our favorite NYC doggy events! The walk is held on the beautiful Hudson River, it raises money to help homeless pets, and several cool vendors and organizations come out to support the walk each year.

What’s cool about this walk is that rescue groups can form “dog packs” and raise funds for their own rescue efforts. Our friends at Yorkie911 Rescue formed a dog pack and raised over $4,000 to help Yorkies in need! The top dog pack honor in NYC goes to Long Island Bulldog Rescue with a fundraising effort of over $33,000!

PupScouts of DPFamily Troop 4 formed a dog pack team to support Best Friends Animal Society and raised close to $2,000 — earning the Golden Mutt Award for raising the most money for BFAS! PupScouts Cubby and Ginger visited the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah over the summer and hope to make a return trip with some other PupScouts next spring after the Blog Paws conference in May.

The PupScouts, a group of philanthropic pups, have more fun and adventure up their doggy sleeves! Follow them on their website PupScouts.org. All pups are welcome to become PupScout members or to form other PupScout groups around the world!

Is NYC’s largest street festival its best | thepupdiary.com

This past weekend we headed to Brooklyn to check out the Atlantic Antic, NYC’s largest street festival spanning four neighborhoods along Atlantic Avenue. We can definitely say this was the most crowded NYC street festival we have ever attended! We heard estimates at over 1 million people! We can also say that they had a nice variety of food and activities for everyone — even doggies! We spent lots of time at the Stella & Chewy’s booth! Was it the best NYC street festival? We’re not sure, but we know we will try to come back next year!

Our tip: Arrive early! The festival opens at noon, but we arrived just after 11 am. We had time to walk the festival and plan our stops before the crowds. By 1:00 pm the street is packed!

The festival featured several dog and cat-themed booths including adoption vans from North Shore Animal League and Sean Casey Animal Rescue. It was fun to see our friends from Brooklyn Bark. Other booths featured vet clinics, doggy art, dog treats, food, and merchandise. We learned about From Scratch cat food and Kennis Baptiste doggy art. BarkBox was there with their newest venture, BarkCare.

After the festival, we walked along the river to Brooklyn Bridge Park for the East River ferry back to Manhattan. Another beautiful day in our favorite city!

French kisses in Bryant Park | thepupdiary.com

The Taste of France came to Bryant Park this past weekend and you know what that means. Frenchie kisses from French Bulldog rescue pups! The French Bulldog Rescue Network was on hand with a doggy kissing booth and some very adorable pups. The rescue network, a volunteer-based group, rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes French Bulldogs in need.

Le Taste of France featured special events and dozens of booths with food, wine, travel information, beauty products, and even a hot air balloon! One doggy highlight was the French Bulldog fashion show on the big stage.

The breeds are coming! The breeds are coming | thepupdiary.com

We are assuming that most people have a favorite dog (or cat) breed. (The International Cat Association recognizes 55 cat breeds. Who knew?!) Mom likes scruffy terriers and terrier mixes. We’re both from shelters and you can definitely see the “terrier” in us! WNYC mapped the most popular NYC dog breeds using dog license information.

The annual Meet the Breeds is coming to the Jacob Javits Center in NYC this weekend. This is a great opportunity to learn about the characteristics of different breeds and check out over 100 vendors offering some cool products. Although you may never get your pup from a breeder, it’s still important to know how breeds are different before you adopt your pup. Terrier mixes can be active pups with lots of energy and a need for stimulation. They aren’t couch potato dogs. Most importantly, find the breed/mix that goes well with your lifestyle!

We’re excited to see the over-the-top booth decorations! Most dog breed booths are decorated to fit the theme of their country of origin or a pop culture reference. Of course, the Cairn terrier will usually have a cute Wizard of Oz theme!

If you love dogs, are thinking about getting a dog, or just want to have a fun afternoon, head to Meet the Breeds this weekend.  And we recommend going early because it gets very crowded!  Last year over 35,000 people attended the event . . .
