All dressed up and somewhere to go! The Blog Paws red carpet pawty!
Maryland Westie Rescue Wine and Fleas | thepupdiary.com
21 MayWhile we were in the Washington, DC area this past weekend for the big Blog Paws conference (more on that later) we were happy to see there were many dog-friendly events taking place around town. (Novadog magazine is a great resource for dog events in the Washington area). One event in particular sounded pawfect — the 7th annual Maryland Westie Rescue Wine and Fleas! We have never seen so many Westies in one location! Not even at our New York City Tartan Parade!
Dog-friendly Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane, Va hosted the event. We loved the rolling green hills, the beautiful flowers, and the fields of grape vines. A doggy paradise! Mom enjoyed the wine tasting, the raffles and silent auction, and the boxed lunch. BOW also sells a variety of cheeses and other light fare. Our wine guy said Virginia has a warmer growing climate than the Riverhead, NY wineries (we love Martha Clara Vineyards) we tend to visit. Not sure if that is the only difference, but mom said the wines were delicious!
Maryland Westie Rescue is an all-volunteer group of people who love West Highland White Terriers. “The mission of Westie Rescue is to facilitate the rescue and adoption of stray, abandoned, neglected, abused, and surrendered Westies of pure or mixed-breed lineage, and place adoptable Westies into permanent, loving homes.” We met some of their adoptable pups who attended the event. We hope they all find loving homes! And we will definitely visit Barrel Oak Winery the next time we are in town!
Mr. Bones & Co. presents Rescue the Runway | thepupdiary.com
17 MayAdoptable (and very adorable) pups hit the catwalk earlier this week in the first annual Rescue the Runway charity event benefiting Animal Haven, Second Chance Rescue, and Pibbles & More Animal Rescue. Celebrity human escorts (models, actors, TV personalities) played second fiddle to the precious pups – many pit bull and mixes — and we loved presenter Cindy Vero’s wit and charm as she introduced the dogs. (Funny that she works with a “Cubby” at 103.5 KTU – BOL!)
After the runway show concluded, guests were encouraged to meet the pups up close and personal and chat with rescue volunteers. We are hoping that all of the pups find loving homes! We loved the tiny 6 week-old pup, Leo! Well we actually loved all of the doggies!
It’s only fitting that the event took place at the New York City Fire Museum where dogs play a special role. A fire doggy memorial adorned one of the walls with photos, collars, information, and even a stuffed former fire dog from years ago.
It’s amazing how dogs are able to inspire us to do some pretty amazing things! Mr. Bones, a rescue pup, was the doggy brain child behind this production. And happy to hear he and his human companion, Elli Frank from Eye5 Marketing & Talent, have already started work on their second annual event with a possible cat theme.
Guests were treated to an open bar, tasty bites from local restaurants Left Bank, Poco, Bell Book & Candle, yummy Crumbs cupcakes, a fabulous silent auction and raffle, and special entertainment by DJ Gabriel Valverde, Band Called Catch and Tora Fisher. Party goers headed to the Brooklyneer for an after party . . .

Prince Harry is in town | thepupdiary.com
14 MayWe met Prince Harry a couple years ago at a polo match on Governors Island. Well actually, dogs are not allowed on Governors Island, so mom met him without us . . .
Prince Harry is back in New York City this week and according to the papers, has a busy schedule. He is visiting youth, touring Super Storm Sandy areas, and of course, playing polo. The invitation-only fourth annual Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup charity polo match at Greenwich Polo Club takes place May 15. We did not score a ticket to this one!
Doggies are welcome at many polo matches in the area. The Greenwich Polo Club season begins on June 2. Gates open at 1 pm and games begin at 3 pm. There is a $40 fee per car. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery!
