Last night we attended a Celebrity Catwalk event featuring adoptable dogs, fashion, drama, more fashion, more drama, and fun! We’ll write full details later and also post some photos! 28 MayWe were both adopted from local shelters (Ginger as an adult pup and Cubby as a puppy). Our mom always said she didn’t have time for a pup and didn’t have the space, but now she can’t imagine her life without us! Boy are we lucky pups she found us and took us in! If you have considered adopting, fostering, or volunteering, come out to meet all of the little New Yorkers who are looking for homes at the upcoming Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days this weekend on June 1 and 2. Below are 10 reasons to check it out:
1. The 2-day event features thousands of dogs and cats available for adoption for FREE! Yes, FREE! (Each shelter and rescue will have their own adoption policies and procedures.)
2. Over 50 shelters and rescue groups from the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals will participate so you will see a great variety of breeds, sizes, ages, mixes. (We prefer the scruffy look!)
3. Maddie’s Fund will pay the organizations an adoption fee from $500 to $2,000 per animal adopted. That means more money in the pockets of our local groups! Maddie’s Fund has set aside $4 million to help host these adoption events across the nation!
4. The adoption events on June 1 and 2 take place all around the city including two large outdoor events in Manhattan. Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm at Petco at 92nd and Broadway. Sunday from 12 to 5 pm at Petco Union Square. Heading to the beach this weekend? There will also be adoption events in the Hamptons, Jersey, and more!
5. FREE product samples will be available at the two large outdoor events.
6. You can save a life!
7. You can host cool events honoring your adopted pup — like the recent Rescue the Runway event at the New York Fire Museum.
8. Summer is the pawfect time to adopt a pup! Especially if you will have to potty train the pooch. If you have tried to potty train a puppy in winter snow storms, you will know what we mean!
9. It can change your life. You will have a new instant best friend, travel buddy, volunteer side kick, wing man, or whatever you are looking for in a dog. 17 MayAdoptable (and very adorable) pups hit the catwalk earlier this week in the first annual Rescue the Runway charity event benefiting Animal Haven, Second Chance Rescue, and Pibbles & More Animal Rescue. Celebrity human escorts (models, actors, TV personalities) played second fiddle to the precious pups – many pit bull and mixes — and we loved presenter Cindy Vero’s wit and charm as she introduced the dogs. (Funny that she works with a “Cubby” at 103.5 KTU – BOL!)
After the runway show concluded, guests were encouraged to meet the pups up close and personal and chat with rescue volunteers. We are hoping that all of the pups find loving homes! We loved the tiny 6 week-old pup, Leo! Well we actually loved all of the doggies!

It’s only fitting that the event took place at the New York City Fire Museum where dogs play a special role. A fire doggy memorial adorned one of the walls with photos, collars, information, and even a stuffed former fire dog from years ago.

It’s amazing how dogs are able to inspire us to do some pretty amazing things! Mr. Bones, a rescue pup, was the doggy brain child behind this production. And happy to hear he and his human companion, Elli Frank from Eye5 Marketing & Talent, have already started work on their second annual event with a possible cat theme.

Guests were treated to an open bar, tasty bites from local restaurants Left Bank, Poco, Bell Book & Candle, yummy Crumbs cupcakes, a fabulous silent auction and raffle, and special entertainment by DJ Gabriel Valverde, Band Called Catch and Tora Fisher. Party goers headed to the Brooklyneer for an after party . . .

With volunteer week upon us, we thought we would share a few ideas where doggy lovers may want to make an impact. And remember, you don’t have to make a huge time commitment! Whether you have a free hour every day, every week, or every month, there is something for everyone! There is even an “It’s My Park Day” where you can volunteer in your fave doggy park!

WORKING WITH KIDS
Animal Haven Shelter hosts a Caring Kids program on Friday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:0 pm. The program introduces children and teens to basic animal care and informs them about existing issues in animal welfare.
A Fair Shake For Youth uses certified therapy dogs to teach at-risk youth dog-handling skills. The basic hands-on work is complemented by guest speakers, field trips, and videos, all of which serve to demonstrate the exceptional capabilities of dogs, the power of the animal-human bond, and help the youth develop prosocial skills and behaviors.
Unleashed is an after-school program that transforms the lives of middle school girls by involving them in all aspects of puppy rescue.
WORKING WITH YOUR THERAPY DOG
Although many therapy dogs do visit hospitals and nursing homes (Cubby does and she loves it!) there are so many other facilities and opportunities for you and your trained therapy dog. There are reading programs, children’s programs, support groups, and so much more!
The Good Dog Foundation promotes the use of animal-assisted therapy. Good Dog’s mission is to elevate the stature and promote society’s understanding of the therapeutic value of the human-animal bond.
The ASPCA is the East Coast Affiliate of Pet Partners, a national organization that aims to improve human health through the assistance of service and therapy animals.

HANDS ON WITH ADOPTABLE DOGS
The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals offers many great volunteer opportunities. Their website includes information and links to the Alliance Participating Organizations. We love Animal Haven Shelter where we adopted Cubby.
Animal Care & Control has simplified their training with new online courses.
Best Friends Animal Society hosts several events in the New York area every year including a huge Super Adoption event. This is a great opportunity to work directly with animals and many rescue groups and shelters. http://network.bestfriends.org/golocal/newyork/default.aspx
If you have a favorite dog breed, see if there is a breed rescue group in your area. We love Yorkie 911 Rescue and Maryland Westie Rescue. The Mayor’s Alliance does list many breed rescue groups.
OTHER PROGRAMS
Volunteer with PAWS NY to help keep people with their pets in times of need. PAWS NY helps individuals care for their pets when physical or financial barriers prevent them from doing so on their own.
Volunteer to help the Humane Society with their Pets for Life hotline.
