The breeds are coming! The breeds are coming | thepupdiary.com

27 Sep

We are assuming that most people have a favorite dog (or cat) breed. (The International Cat Association recognizes 55 cat breeds. Who knew?!) Mom likes scruffy terriers and terrier mixes. We’re both from shelters and you can definitely see the “terrier” in us! WNYC mapped the most popular NYC dog breeds using dog license information.

The annual Meet the Breeds is coming to the Jacob Javits Center in NYC this weekend. This is a great opportunity to learn about the characteristics of different breeds and check out over 100 vendors offering some cool products. Although you may never get your pup from a breeder, it’s still important to know how breeds are different before you adopt your pup. Terrier mixes can be active pups with lots of energy and a need for stimulation. They aren’t couch potato dogs. Most importantly, find the breed/mix that goes well with your lifestyle!

We’re excited to see the over-the-top booth decorations! Most dog breed booths are decorated to fit the theme of their country of origin or a pop culture reference. Of course, the Cairn terrier will usually have a cute Wizard of Oz theme!

If you love dogs, are thinking about getting a dog, or just want to have a fun afternoon, head to Meet the Breeds this weekend.  And we recommend going early because it gets very crowded!  Last year over 35,000 people attended the event . . .

How cool is this?! One of our favorite stores, Anthropologie (they always carry cute doggy-themed merchandise), will host doggy events all across the nation this coming weekend! There will be adoption events, pet supply drives, and other special events.

The New York City stores have teamed with Animal Haven Shelter for pet adoptions. We will check out the book event on Saturday featuring Home Cooking for your Dog at the SoHo location. The Rockefeller Center location has a very cute doggy art gallery (photos below) with items for sale.

Find a #SitStayLove event near you and join the fun!

Bow wow WOW for Broadway Barks | thepupdiary.com

15 Jul

We headed to Shubert Alley Saturday afternoon to check out the 15th annual Broadway Barks pet adoption event. We went early because it was hot outside and the event tends to get very crowded with people looking to adopt animals and meet Broadway stars.

Shubert Alley gets ready for Broadway Barks

Founded by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, Broadway Barks has seen hundreds of animals find forever homes through this annual event. Animal shelters and rescue groups from the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals line the Alley and part of 45th Street with adoption information tables and adoptable animals. Mom was approached several times to see if we were available for adoption. Nope! But we both did have similar starts as shelter pups looking for homes! We wanted to spend the afternoon at the Stella & Chewy’s table looking for treats!

On Sunday, while shopping for dinner at our local pet shop, we met a doggy who had been adopted the day before at the event. He was so cute and had a sad story with a happy ending. Someone had left him in Brooklyn tied to a tree. Thankfully some kind folks found him and took him to BARC Shelter where he got care before his adoption. So happy he found his forever home! We’ll bark to that!!

Our unexpected guest at Rescues Rock the Runway | thepupdiary.com

Yorkie911 Rescue has placed over 400 doggies into loving homes over the past four years! Their annual Rescues Rock the Runway event, held this past weekend at the Hauppauge Sheraton Hotel, was the pawfect place to celebrate and help raise money for even more success stories! And truth be told, the Yorkie folks sure do know how to host a great event! Food, fashion, friends, fun giveaways, and over fifty great raffle baskets! A fun day on Long Island for a great cause.

Adopted dogs took center stage wearing gorgeous fashions by Toni Mari Designs, NemiCouture, Chick-a-Bow-Wow, and Vienna Couture Canine. All outfits were available for sale after the runway show with a portion of the proceeds donated to Yorkie911 Rescue. We loved meeting the designers and seeing their fashions up close and personal. PawVogue came out to check out the show and take fashion photos.

We had a surprise visitor- a tick! We found the critter on Ginger’s belly as we were leaving. Mom applied a vial of Frontline Plus to Ginger’s neck and the tick jumped off onto the couch where mom caught it. We called the vet who said the tick could start to spread disease only after 24 hours of attachment. He told us to apply Frontline every 3 weeks if we will visit Connecticut or Long Island, where ticks are becoming resistant sooner than the 4-week recommended dosage. Our doggy friends recommended Earth Animal Internal Powder so we will give it a try! Of course, we had just attended a Lyme disease event and mom did not take her own advice! She screamed and flushed the tick down the toilet . . . We heard it is going to be a very bad tick season in our area so we need to get prepared!

We love Yorkie911 Rescue because they truly love the dogs! They are a group of volunteers with a passion for helping pups. They are always looking for volunteers to foster, visit homes of potential adopters, help at doggy adoption events, and other tasks. Join their team for the upcoming Strut Your Mutt on September 28 in NYC– an annual dog walk and fair on the Hudson River!

Over 1,500 pet adoptions in Maddie’s Fund Adoption Days NYC (Video) | thepupdiary.com

3 Jun

Update on June 7: We just received the official event press release and more than 2,500 adoptions took place in the NYC area during the Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days!! It was the city’s biggest pet adoption event ever!

*************************

Last week we listed 10 reasons to adopt a dog at the Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days in NYC. We decided to check out Sunday’s large event at Petco Union Square. It was a busy and bustling scene in the hot sun! We even saw a cat getting a bath to cool down! Kudos to Rock & Rawhide, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, and the Petco Foundation for helping to make the event a success!

Happy to report that over 1,500 adoptions took place this weekend!
