Wagging tails at the Wigglebutt Wedding | thepupdiary.com

10 Jul

There was lots of buzz leading up to the Wigglebutt Wedding, a “fun”draiser for Life’s Little Paws Cocker Spaniel Rescue held in Stratford, Connecticut the end of June. There were bridal fittings, cake tastings, special jeweled collar offerings, radio and TV appearances, PR releases, special Facebook pages . . . We have attended several doggy weddings where two pooches tie the knot and seal their relationship with a bark, a wag, and a butt sniff. But this Wigglebutt Wedding takes the (doggy) cake!

We have not even seen this much detail in many human weddings! (Not that two terriers are usually invited to human weddings – BOL!) From the Miniature-dogs-cats.com cake topper to the Bandit Rubio designed gown to the beautiful floral displays — Dexter and Zoe were some pampered pooches! And mom actually ate our Giggy Bites dog snacks!! Note to mom: don’t eat and drive! We had Bubba Rose doggy cake and Halo Pet treats – yum! The two doggy moms, Carol and Val, are busy planning another “fun”draiser for next year! Can’t wait to see what they have planned.

8 summer activities for New York dogs | thepupdiary.com

21 Jun

There was a lot of tail wagging in our house this morning! Not only is it national “Take Your Dog to Work Day” it is also the first day of summer! Check out some summer activity and event ideas for New York dogs and the people who love them!

Camp Time
We head to Glen Highland Farm in upstate New York every summer for outdoor fun and relaxation. The farm, home to a Border Collie rescue group, features 175 acres of beaches, trails, woods, and pastures. Best of all, the entire farm is dog friendly. Also check out Camp Unleashed and Camp Gone to the Dogs.

Polo
Doggies are welcome at many polo matches in the area. The Greenwich Polo Club season began earlier in June. Gates open at 1 pm and games begin at 3 pm. There is a $40 fee per car. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery!

Get some History
We love visiting the Hyde Park, NY area for beautiful scenery and historic sites. The home of Franklin D Roosevelt allows leashed dogs on the outside grounds. It is about a 2-hour drive from NYC. While there we also toured the grounds of the Vanderbilt Mansion and Val-Kill.

Kayak and Hound
Discover Outdoors is offering some cool Kayak trips this summer that are dog friendly! The day trips feature kayaking on a beautiful section of the Hudson River in Upstate New York. Speaking of Discover Outdoors . . . They also offer fun day-long hiking trips with your dog or an adoptable pup! The trip with the adoptable pup also includes a volunteer orientation at Animal Haven Shelter.

Wine Time
We love the wineries in Riverhead on Long Island. Many are dog friendly and offer a relaxing setting for a lazy afternoon. We head to Martha Clara Vineyards at least once every summer. They feature vines and canines vineyard walks several times a year where you can take an educational walk through the grounds. Another great dog-friendly winery is Robibero Vineyards in New Paltz.

Take a Walk
Last summer we checked out Bideawee’s Love on a Leash walk in Westhampton Beach. This year the walk will be held on August 17 and we hope to attend again! We did the walk, checked out a great farmer’s market nearby, hit the shopping district, went to the beach after hours, and then toured a winery the next day. Or check out the Walkway over the Hudson River – an old railroad bridge turned into a 1.28 mile walkway over the river. It is the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.

Pawty Time
There are many local doggy events during the summer. We like the annual L’Oreal Your Dog is Worth it Too event held on August 17 this year. Check the calendar for many other summer events! The annual Broadway Barks is another big celebration!

Staycation
August weekends in New York City are great because everyone else is out of town! Many of the activities we listed in 10 Memorial Day Weekend Activities are still relevant this summer. We know we will head to the Hester Street Fair, Smorgasburg, and South Street Seaport!

Have a happy and safe summer!

Play date with Val Chmerkovskiy’s pup, Sir Sleep | thepupdiary.com

20 Jun

It’s not every day we get to romp with Dancing with the Stars Val Chmerkovskiy’s English Bulldog pup, Sir Sleep! Sir Sleep, wearing a custom-made tuxedo, is a real cutie pie. (And Val is pretty adorable, too! BOL!!) Truth be told, Cubby loves to watch Dancing with the Stars. Not sure if it is the shimmering costumes or the shakes, rattles, and rolls, but she is hooked!

Sir Sleep helps promote P&G IAMS Dog Food

Sir Sleep helps promote P&G IAMS Dog Food

Val and Sir Sleep were in New York City yesterday to help promote Procter & Gamble’s Everyday Effect program, P&G’s largest consumer event ever. Sir Sleep held court near the 72nd Street Dog Run in Riverside Park and of course his featured brand was IAMS dog food. Mom doesn’t feed us IAMS, but we do use many other P&G products like Swiffer, Charmin, and Puffs. We got a cool goody box with many of the P&G products in sample sizes. This will be pawfect for our upcoming camping trip at Glen Highland Farm! Sir Sleep gave us some IAMS So Good doggy treats to try!

Sir Sleep wasn’t really into romping. We guess that is why he is called Sir Sleep! But he and Val were both very nice. Throughout the day, P&G gave out over 40,000 free products around the city. We hope Sir Sleep got lots of IAMS treats!!

Observations from a Puppy Prom | thepupdiary.com

17 Jun

We have a confession to make. This past Saturday we attended our fifth Puppy Prom! We attended the very first Salty Paw Puppy Prom several years ago – Cubby was even crowned prom queen one year! And now the most recent prom – our friends’ event this past weekend at Toyota of Manhattan. Why do we keep coming back? We love the giddy emotions that a prom evokes! Also, at this year’s event raising close to $1,500 for Metropolitan Maltese Rescue is not too shabby! And a big congratulations to the Prom King and Queen — Mr. America and Gia Marie!

Here is what we saw and heard at the New York City 2013 Puppy Prom!

Whose prom is it anyway (and does it matter)? Part of the fun of attending themed events is seeing how the guests interpret the theme in their outfit design and choice. A “puppy prom” is of course an event for the pups. But matchy-matchy human outfits add an additional entertaining element. It was fun seeing all of the coordinating gowns, jewels, and tiaras. And mom says she probably would have had more fun at her own prom had we been there with her! Some of the moms never had a chance to attend their high school proms. I bet they had more fun at this one anyway!!

Pretty in Pink: Pretty pink fairy tale gowns were everywhere! Another common theme was black. We checked Seventeen magazine to see what they had to say about 2013 prom dress trends – lace, sequins, peplum, asymmetrical, vintage, cutouts, and strapless. For a “unique” option they suggested ombre. We know the designers are always proud when their outfits “win”. Mom thinks someone should produce a doggy designer reality show! Our favorite gown was by Tammy Peace on Pretty Lily.

To date or not to date?: We found prom dates at the 11th hour. Meaning we were at the Halo, Purely for Pets pop-up shop an hour before the prom where we met 2 other dateless male pups, Buttercup and Lucas. They asked to escort us and we said sure. Some doggy couples had coordinating outfits with tiny corsages. Many dates continued to party even after the event with dinner at cafes and drinks in lounges. We had to leave early for a pet therapy visit.

What’s next?: Just when we think we have seen every possible event on the NYC dog scene, something else comes along! And we like it that way!

Our unexpected guest at Rescues Rock the Runway | thepupdiary.com

12 Jun

Yorkie911 Rescue has placed over 400 doggies into loving homes over the past four years! Their annual Rescues Rock the Runway event, held this past weekend at the Hauppauge Sheraton Hotel, was the pawfect place to celebrate and help raise money for even more success stories! And truth be told, the Yorkie folks sure do know how to host a great event! Food, fashion, friends, fun giveaways, and over fifty great raffle baskets! A fun day on Long Island for a great cause.

Adopted dogs took center stage wearing gorgeous fashions by Toni Mari Designs, NemiCouture, Chick-a-Bow-Wow, and Vienna Couture Canine. All outfits were available for sale after the runway show with a portion of the proceeds donated to Yorkie911 Rescue. We loved meeting the designers and seeing their fashions up close and personal. PawVogue came out to check out the show and take fashion photos.

We had a surprise visitor- a tick! We found the critter on Ginger’s belly as we were leaving. Mom applied a vial of Frontline Plus to Ginger’s neck and the tick jumped off onto the couch where mom caught it. We called the vet who said the tick could start to spread disease only after 24 hours of attachment. He told us to apply Frontline every 3 weeks if we will visit Connecticut or Long Island, where ticks are becoming resistant sooner than the 4-week recommended dosage. Our doggy friends recommended Earth Animal Internal Powder so we will give it a try! Of course, we had just attended a Lyme disease event and mom did not take her own advice! She screamed and flushed the tick down the toilet . . . We heard it is going to be a very bad tick season in our area so we need to get prepared!

We love Yorkie911 Rescue because they truly love the dogs! They are a group of volunteers with a passion for helping pups. They are always looking for volunteers to foster, visit homes of potential adopters, help at doggy adoption events, and other tasks. Join their team for the upcoming Strut Your Mutt on September 28 in NYC– an annual dog walk and fair on the Hudson River!
