Bark in the Park with the Brooklyn Cyclones | thepupdiary.com

29 Aug

We love dog-friendly baseball games! We get to run in the field, eat hot dogs, hang out with our doggy friends, and did we mention eat hot dogs?! Earlier this year we checked out the Mets at Citi Field. Last night, we headed to Brooklyn for the Bark in the Park with the Cyclones.

The game is held at MCU Park in Coney Island. The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals had adoption vans with cute adoptable animals. We sat in the bleacher section, which was renamed the “BOW-WOW zone” for the night.

After the game we walked on the dog-friendly Coney Island boardwalk. (We tried to walk on the beach, but dogs are not allowed.)

Upcoming Bark in the Park with the Mets will be held on September 9 and 14 at Citi Field.

We walked over the Hudson River | thepupdiary.com

7 Aug

We were excited to check out the Walkway over the Hudson – the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. At 212 feet tall and 1.28 miles long, it was one fun dog-friendly walk! Leashed pups are always welcome on the walkway. But be careful because the pavement can get really hot in the summer sun! The park was nice to post alerts about the pavement temperatures!

Getting there
We drove to Poughkeepsie and found on-street free parking one block from the walk’s entrance. We climbed several flights of stairs to get to the elevated park and walkway where we were happy to see vendors selling water, popcorn, and other snacks.

The walk
Bring plenty of water because there is not much shade during this 1.28 mile walk. What you will find are great river and shoreline views! We met lots of really friendly families with kids and dogs. There are a few benches at the half-way point, so we rested there for some photos. The Walkway is an old abandoned railroad bridge and there are historical photos and information posted along the route. We think this would be a great place to check out the fall leaves!

Make it a day trip
After the walk we headed to dog-friendly Robibero Vineyards in New Paltz about 20 minutes from Poughkeepsie. We were welcome inside and outside the cute winery. New Paltz also had a small downtown area with shops and restaurants.

Doggy Dash in Central Park | thepupdiary.com

15 Jul

Doggy athletes competed in Animal Medical Center’s 5-mile Doggy Dash race through Central Park yesterday morning. The doggy event, part of the Aquaphor NYC Triathlon, sells out every year. The pups were checked by Animal Medical Center’s medical staff before, during, and after the race. And the after-race festival featured cooling stations with swimming pools, beverages, and Yappy Treats Cart doggy yogurt. Yum! A big congratulations to all of the doggy athletes! You make us proud!

City Dog Expert features NYC dog-friendly homes | thepupdiary.com

9 Jul

When City Dog Expert asked to showcase our New York City dog-friendly apartment in her feature “Boudoir Interview” series, we said sure! You’ll never see our small lair in House Beautiful, but we do try to make good use of space. And it’s fun to see how other doggies live in the big city! From Park Avenue pups to Brooklyn barkers to canines in Queens — doggy living quarters can be as diverse as all of the different breeds, but there are usually a few things in common. The need for space, storage, and more space!

Container Store door storage

Container Store door storage

A few of our tips:

-We use Container Store Elfa door storage racks to keep our doggy “stuff” in one area of the apartment
-We buy gently used furniture items from The Salvation Army (West 46th Street between 10th and 11th Aves) . . . they always have a great selection at low prices
-We donate all of our unused doggy items to Rock & Rawhide — they have drop boxes at local Petco stores
-We keep a Critter Zone air purifier going to cut down on odors
-We follow the “rule” when one item comes into the house, one item must leave the house . . .

A big thanks to City Dog Expert for interviewing us!

Dog-friendly ferry ride on New York’s East River | thepupdiary.com

24 Jun

We don’t have to go far for a dog-friendly cruise around Manhattan. Departing from east 34th Street, the East River Ferry allows dogs in bags, and at $4 per ride or $12 for a day pass, the ferry is a fun way to travel the city. (We use the stroller since it gives us more room and extra storage space.) Bring your camera for great views including the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and more!

We left 34th Street and headed to Brooklyn Bridge Park/DUMBO for brunch at the dog-friendly Sunday Smorgasburg in the Tobacco Warehouse. (NOTE: The Saturday Smorgasburg in the East River State Park is not dog friendly.) The park offers beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline, plenty of paths to explore, and 2 dog runs. Unfortunately, dogs are not welcome on the lawns. Luke’s Lobster and No. 7 Sub have a cute walk-up cafe under the Brooklyn Bridge – a pawfect place to stop for a drink! It’s also fun to sit near the water and Jane’s Carousel.

From Brooklyn Bridge Park we took the ferry back to Manhattan and Wall Street/The South Street Seaport. We headed to our favorite doggy boutique with the best doggy snack bar, The Salty Paw, at the end of Pier 17. From there we checked out the new SmorgasBar, part of the Seaport’s SEE/CHANGE lineup for this summer. SmorgasBar is open daily through October. The Seaport will show outdoor movies every week during the summer and also has new retail container pop-up shops. We headed a few blocks north to check out the New Amsterdam Market and then back to the ferry for our trip to 34th Street. A fun day on the water!
