8 summer activities for New York dogs | thepupdiary.com

21 Jun

There was a lot of tail wagging in our house this morning! Not only is it national “Take Your Dog to Work Day” it is also the first day of summer! Check out some summer activity and event ideas for New York dogs and the people who love them!

Camp Time
We head to Glen Highland Farm in upstate New York every summer for outdoor fun and relaxation. The farm, home to a Border Collie rescue group, features 175 acres of beaches, trails, woods, and pastures. Best of all, the entire farm is dog friendly. Also check out Camp Unleashed and Camp Gone to the Dogs.

Polo
Doggies are welcome at many polo matches in the area. The Greenwich Polo Club season began earlier in June. Gates open at 1 pm and games begin at 3 pm. There is a $40 fee per car. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery!

Get some History
We love visiting the Hyde Park, NY area for beautiful scenery and historic sites. The home of Franklin D Roosevelt allows leashed dogs on the outside grounds. It is about a 2-hour drive from NYC. While there we also toured the grounds of the Vanderbilt Mansion and Val-Kill.

Kayak and Hound
Discover Outdoors is offering some cool Kayak trips this summer that are dog friendly! The day trips feature kayaking on a beautiful section of the Hudson River in Upstate New York. Speaking of Discover Outdoors . . . They also offer fun day-long hiking trips with your dog or an adoptable pup! The trip with the adoptable pup also includes a volunteer orientation at Animal Haven Shelter.

Wine Time
We love the wineries in Riverhead on Long Island. Many are dog friendly and offer a relaxing setting for a lazy afternoon. We head to Martha Clara Vineyards at least once every summer. They feature vines and canines vineyard walks several times a year where you can take an educational walk through the grounds. Another great dog-friendly winery is Robibero Vineyards in New Paltz.

Take a Walk
Last summer we checked out Bideawee’s Love on a Leash walk in Westhampton Beach. This year the walk will be held on August 17 and we hope to attend again! We did the walk, checked out a great farmer’s market nearby, hit the shopping district, went to the beach after hours, and then toured a winery the next day. Or check out the Walkway over the Hudson River – an old railroad bridge turned into a 1.28 mile walkway over the river. It is the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.

Pawty Time
There are many local doggy events during the summer. We like the annual L’Oreal Your Dog is Worth it Too event held on August 17 this year. Check the calendar for many other summer events! The annual Broadway Barks is another big celebration!

Staycation
August weekends in New York City are great because everyone else is out of town! Many of the activities we listed in 10 Memorial Day Weekend Activities are still relevant this summer. We know we will head to the Hester Street Fair, Smorgasburg, and South Street Seaport!

Have a happy and safe summer!

10 Memorial Day weekend activities for New York dogs | thepupdiary.com

24 May

While many dogs are hitting the road this very busy Memorial Day travel weekend, we are having a staycation in New York City to explore, relax, and have some fun! Here are 10 dog activities and events we may try to check out in the next few days:

Hester Street Fair: The Hester Street Fair at the corner of Hester and Essex is open Saturdays through October 26 from 10 am to 6 pm. This is the pawfect spot for an outdoor brunch with yummy food and cool vendors.

South Street Seaport: We luv the Seaport area! The Salty Paw’s new summer location on Pier 17 is pawsome! And we are excited to check out the Seaport’s new SEE/CHANGE program with pop-up shops and restaurants. A SmorgasBar opens at the Seaport today!

Visiting Brooklyn

Visiting Brooklyn

Smorgasburg (DUMBO): We hop the East River Ferry (dogs in bags are welcome) and head to DUMBO for beautiful views, good food, and open spaces! The Sunday Smorgasburg in the Tobacco Warehouse allows pups. It gets very crowded so come early!

Celebrity Catwalk Pawty: Celebrity Catwalk is hosting a party on Saturday evening, May 25 from 5 to 7 pm at their Pre Paws In The City Yappy Hour at Unleashed by Petco 157 Chambers Street (Between West Broadway & Greenwich)

Pup crawl: We start at the dog-friendly 105th Street Hudson Beach Cafe. Then head down to the Boat Basin Cafe at 79th Street followed by Pier I cafe. If we still feel like walking, we hit PD O’Hurley’s at Pier 84 and a final stop at The Frying Pan! A beautiful walk along the river!

Volunteer: We are spending part of the weekend doing home visits for Yorkie 911 Rescue. We compiled a list with some volunteer options for NY dogs.

Central Park time: Nuff said! We love to explore the park in the early morning and dusk. Too bad they aren’t having a Bagel Bark this weekend!

Clean: UGH! But we still have spring cleaning to do! Go through your old towels and linens and donate them to Rock and Rawhide or the Oklahoma tornado effort. Rock and Rawhide will collect linens at the Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days event on June 1 and 2.

Shop: So it looks like rain for at least part of the weekend . . . We will do some online shopping at Res-Q-Threads – we luv their new Yorkie shirt! We’ll also stroll through The Shops at Columbus Circle on our way to the park!

Day Trip: Hop a Metro North train and head outside the city for an afternoon. (It is even fun to just explore Grand Central Terminal without taking the train anywhere!) Where to go? Croton Point Park, Yonkers waterfront, Tarrytown . . . Here are a few options from a CBS news report.

And don’t forget to relax! We love to hang out at Madison Square Park’s Shake Shack with a Pooch-ini and a good book. There is some good doggy watching there!

FOOD: The Hester Street Fair opens this weekend! The fair is held every Saturday through October from 10 am to 6 pm at the corner of Hester and Essex. They always have yummy food and often have dog treat vendors!

FROLICKING: The Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair takes place this Saturday, April 27. They have a “Petcurean” area with a doggy walk on the orange carpet and dog treats. Short films about dogs will be shown in the tent.

Bark in the Park with the Mets at Citi Field | thepupdiary.com

21 Apr

How lucky are we to attend a Major League baseball game?! The Mets organization teams with animal charities to host dog-friendly Bark in the Park events two times each season. The spring game took place this weekend at Citi Field and benefitted North Shore Animal League America. Hundreds of doggies took part in a field-level doggy parade and then watched the game from the Pepsi Porch. The first 500 pups received cute Mets-themed bandanas.

BARK in the Park

BARK in the Park

We yipped and yapped at all of the dogs and were truly astonished at the different breeds represented. It was a “meet the breeds” at the ballpark– from Dobermans to Saint Bernards to Yorkies, Westies, Huskies, and everything in between! The next dog-friendly game will be held on Saturday, September 14. Purchase your tickets as soon as they become available because this sells out every year. AND, many other Major League teams host events throughout the season! If you are traveling this summer, check the local team to see what they have planned. Play ball!!
