Dogs of New York – Sisu the Afghan Hound | thepupdiary.com

1 Jun

We met Sisu the Afghan Hound at the New Yorkie Runway show this past February where he was crowned Best in Show. These days the handsome pup is helping his mom, Laura Diaz, with her new Yappy Treats Cart doggy frozen yogurt business. The cart debuted in Central Park last weekend to lots of barks and tongue licks. We have sampled the dogfroyo and it is delicious! (And all-natural, too!) Follow @YappyTreatsCart on Twitter to find the cart. They also participate in many special events benefiting shelters and rescue groups including the upcoming Bideawee Take a Sip and Save a Life wine event on June 5 at 67 Wine.

We are happy to introduce you to Sisu!

Where are you from? I was born in Helsinki, Finland

How did you get your name? I was one of twelve in my litter so there was a lot of competition. Because I emerged as the leader of my pack, my dad named me ‘Sisu’. ‘Sisu’ (pronounced Seesoo) is a Finish term often described as integral to understanding the Finnish culture. It has been loosely translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity.

What is your hood? Upper West Side

Fave dog-friendly NY spot? Definitely Amsterdam Ale House. They got the best beer and dog treats. It’s like Cheers, everybody knows my name.

Fave day trip from NY? I love riding in my dad’s truck. It doesn’t matter where we are going, as long as I can rest my muzzle on an open window and inhale.

Do you have any pet peeves? My half brother, Merlin, a crazy Weimaraner. He can be very annoying.

Human peeves? Having to move when my dad is trying to vacuum. Usually I pretend like I am sleeping and have him vacuum around him. Check out “Sisu and the vacuum cleaner” on YouTube to see what I mean!

What do you like to eat? I have a diverse palate when it comes to food; Japanese sushi, Mexican tamales, Thai noodles, etc., but admittedly my vice is pizza.

What do you think of your mom’s new Yappy Treats Cart? I was very happy with my mom making healthy doggie ice cream, until she starting giving it to other dogs. Now I have to guard the cart to make sure no one takes my stash.

If you could break biscuits with any doggy (past or present) who would that be? International Champion Afghan Hound from my kennel, Wild West.

Any famous humans you would like to meet? I have a picture with Jerry Stiller, which is pretty cool. He lives in my hood. No disrespect to Jerry but I have a soft spot for pretty ladies. I would not wash the spot on my head if Catherine Zeta Jones were to pet me.

Birthday suit or dressed to the K-nines? Look, I carry a winter coat all year round. That’s enough for me. But I have my own collection of snoods. I have ones for my favorite sports teams, but I like my Harley Davidson snood the best. I also have an Angel on A Leash snood for my important work as a therapy dog.

Any new doggy products you can recommend? My mom’s Dogfroyo, of course! I watch her make it and it’s oh!… so good!

What’s in your doggy bag? My hair brush, a snood, and a couple of dollars to buy ice cream.

Favorite doggy charity? I don’t have one but if I had to choose I would give my bones to those Grey Hound rescues. They are way too thin.

Any human charities you like to support? Unicef because it focuses on children and let’s face it, I am a kid trapped in a dog’s body.

What is one thing other pups probably don’t know about you? A lot of pups are intimidated about my size but what they don’t know is that I am really skinny under all this hair. They should see me after a bath.

Upcoming summer plans? Marking the neighborhood, meeting bitches and keeping cool!

The case of the missing terrier at A Fetching Affair | thepupdiary.com

1 Jun

We went to the very lovely “A Fetching Affair” benefit for The Good Dog Foundation last evening. We love the work they do in animal-assisted therapy, and we have been volunteering with them for the past three years. We visit nursing homes, after-school programs, support groups, and other facilities around New York City.

The event, held at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers celebrated The Good Dog Foundation’s 15-year anniversary. Yay! Founder Rachel McPherson is a pioneer in animal-assisted therapy and a down-to-earth and kind person. We spent most of the evening at the Stella & Chewy’s doggy bar. Yum!! We love Stella & Chewy’s and their commitment to animal rescue and therapy pups! And kudos to event host, Maria Milito, Q104.3 On-Air Personality.

While enjoying the sit-down dinner and program, all guests were invited to adopt the cute doggy table centerpieces. Of course, mom decided to adopt the terrier at our table. He was a cute Scottie chalkboard with a solid base and erect tail. The pawfect addition to our doggy figurine collection! As the party was winding down and we were getting ready to leave, a woman snuck up from behind, grabbed our terrier, and made a run for the door! She was trying to take our little Scottie!

We made our way to the exit and found the woman at the check-out desk with Scottie in tow. She decided she didn’t want the little pup when she found out she had to make a donation to The Good Dog Foundation to keep him. She left him at the front desk and walked out . . . We now have a cute terrier chalkboard in our apartment!

Best part of the evening: (Well besides the Stella & Chewy’s doggy bar!) Loved the speeches by the two honorees – The New York County District Attorney’s Office and Standing Tall. Relevant, touching, funny, and kind. Good Dog therapy dogs are making a difference!

Mr. Bones & Co. presents Rescue the Runway | thepupdiary.com

17 May

Adoptable (and very adorable) pups hit the catwalk earlier this week in the first annual Rescue the Runway charity event benefiting Animal Haven, Second Chance Rescue, and Pibbles & More Animal Rescue. Celebrity human escorts (models, actors, TV personalities) played second fiddle to the precious pups – many pit bull and mixes — and we loved presenter Cindy Vero’s wit and charm as she introduced the dogs. (Funny that she works with a “Cubby” at 103.5 KTU – BOL!)

After the runway show concluded, guests were encouraged to meet the pups up close and personal and chat with rescue volunteers. We are hoping that all of the pups find loving homes! We loved the tiny 6 week-old pup, Leo! Well we actually loved all of the doggies!

It’s only fitting that the event took place at the New York City Fire Museum where dogs play a special role. A fire doggy memorial adorned one of the walls with photos, collars, information, and even a stuffed former fire dog from years ago.

It’s amazing how dogs are able to inspire us to do some pretty amazing things! Mr. Bones, a rescue pup, was the doggy brain child behind this production. And happy to hear he and his human companion, Elli Frank from Eye5 Marketing & Talent, have already started work on their second annual event with a possible cat theme.

Guests were treated to an open bar, tasty bites from local restaurants Left Bank, Poco, Bell Book & Candle, yummy Crumbs cupcakes, a fabulous silent auction and raffle, and special entertainment by DJ Gabriel Valverde, Band Called Catch and Tora Fisher. Party goers headed to the Brooklyneer for an after party . . .

Celebrity Catwalk Paws in the City at The Salty Paw | thepupdiary.com

13 May

Although it was raining cats and dogs Saturday afternoon, we ventured out and headed down to the new Salty Paw boutique at the end of Pier 17 at the Seaport. (Read The Salty Paw’s Super Storm Sandy story here.) Celebrity Catwalk was hosting an event to promote their upcoming Paws in the City fashion show, which will take place on June 1 at Calumet Gallery. Fashion designers from around the globe are busy putting the finishing touches on their outfits that will be worn by over a dozen furry fashionista doggy models. Yes, we are modeling in this one! You don’t want to miss this fun event so get your tickets soon!

The Salty Paw

We absolutely love The Salty Paw’s new summer home at the end of the Pier! (This will be one of our fave summer hangouts!) Not only do they carry the most fun and practical doggy items (they have one of the best selections of local doggy treats in the area), they also have a wonderful water view, a friendly staff, and creative groomers! If you are looking to add a touch of color to your doggy fur coat, this is the place to come! Oh and did we mention that they have treat SAMPLES all around the boutique. YUM!! Celebrity Catwalk had goody bags for everyone with Wahl dog shampoo and other items. (Mom loved the Reena Treats cupcakes!)

The Salty Paw’s summer location: 89 South Street, the end of Pier 17 at the Seaport – walk outside to the end of the Pier and you will see their signs! The East River Ferry allows small dogs in bags and is a convenient way to visit the area.

And don’t forget to visit Celebrity Catwalk for tickets and upcoming event information!

We won a doggy treat basket by Dig In Dogs – yum! And our friend gave us one of her Rams Dog Food samples to try. We had a bite at the event and loved the all-natural doggy food!

Be sure to visit the K9Kastle page to learn about their adoptable pups. Their information: K9Kastle Corp. is a volunteer run, not-for-profit rescue group that rehabilitates and rehomes both cats and dogs. K9Kastle is a proud member of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, and is grateful to enjoy the generosity of Maddie’s fund.
