10 NYC holiday traditions perfect for dogs | thepupdiary.com

21 Nov

We love this time of year! And we especially love spending time in New York City in December. There are beautiful decorations on every corner, pop-up food festivals, craft fairs, and of course, Santa Claus!

Below are 10 dog-friendly activities and events we will check out this holiday season. Let us know if you have some doggy traditions not to miss!

Grand Central Terminal
We absolutely love Grand Central Terminal! There is dog-friendly shopping, dining (Shake Shack!) and this time of year they unleash the Holiday Fair in Vanderbilt Hall with gift ideas pawfect for everyone in your family!  The Life of Ryley had some really cute and unique doggy gifts, too! Also, don’t miss the Holiday Light Show each evening.

Shops at Columbus Circle
Another great place to get out of the cold and enjoy shopping and a pretty holiday light show! Yes, the Shops at Columbus Circle welcome dogs. Their light show “Holiday Under the Stars” runs every evening and is set to beautiful music. The Winter’s Eve party on December 2 is very crowded, but lots of fun, too.

Volunteer/Give Back
So we can’t volunteer in a soup kitchen, but there are lots of ways we can give back this holiday season. We especially like Amazon wish lists because they are easy to use and we like to shop! Ask your favorite charity if they have a wish list where you can purchase items they need. Clean your closet and donate your old towels and sheets to the local animal shelter. Check out lots of ideas here.

Lord & Taylor
Sure there are lots of department stores to visit (many are dog friendly), but Lord & Taylor is our favorite! They are very friendly to the pups and they even carry a special doggy line this season with cute toys, bowls, and sweaters from Hudson’s Bay Company and Harry Barker. Their beautiful holiday windows and interactive photo shoot are great this year!

Santa Claus
In the past, the Bloomingdale’s Santa Claus has been dog friendly. He comes down from the North Pole to meet kids and pups and listen to their wishes.  Check your local pet boutique for special Santa visits, too!

Bryant Park
Love Bryant Park in every season! Especially love the Winter Village with dog-friendly shopping and dining. The shops are open through January 5. We hope they show outdoor winter movies again this year, too! Not too crowded and fun to snuggle with a pup and popcorn!

Window Shopping
Stores are slowly unveiling their holiday windows this season and we have not been disappointed! We are really excited to see the Saks windows with the Yeti! We are assuming that will be our fave this year!! Most of the NYC department stores are very dog friendly with the exception of Macy’s . . .  Racked has good holiday window information.

Holiday Markets
We love holiday markets because they often feature local shops and products. In general, the outdoor markets are dog friendly, and Racked has a list of 15 best holiday pop-up shops this season. The indoor Grand Central market is dog friendly. We’ll try to update this with other dog-friendly indoor options!

Head to Church
Once again, Christ Church will host a Blessing for the Animals on December 8 at 2 pm. The event is hosted by Cindy Adams and the New York Post. Expect a very beautiful church and a huge crowd.

Photo Opps
Kimpton Hotels usually will host a Santa Paws photo day in December, so we will watch for that information. There are beautiful photo opps at every turn this time of year. Have your camera ready! Also check your local pet boutique and shelter for Santa photo shoots.

Lunch on the run with Broadway Bites | thepupdiary.com

12 Nov

We love outdoor food festivals! Well, outdoor food festivals that are dog friendly! Mom lets us try different human foods and we all get to hang out together in the sun. Broadway Bites is the newest culinary food market from UrbanSpace NYC. The market will be open daily through November 24 in Greeley Square Park at Broadway and 33rd Street. With over 2 dozen food vendors, there is something for everyone! No dog food . . . but lots of other cool items to try. We also like the Winter Village in Bryant Park for snacks. And also all of our favorite dog-friendly burger joints!

New Tribeca Dog Run | thepupdiary.com

23 Sep

This past weekend’s beautiful fall weather gave us the pawfect opportunity to check out the brand new Tribeca Small Dog Run at Pier 26 in Hudson River Park. The run, situated near the river, had a nice breeze coming off of the water, a doggy sprinkler area for play, and doggy drinking fountains. It also had a price tag of over $4 million!

The dog run is open 7 days a week from 6 am to 1 am. At 3 pm on a nice Saturday afternoon, there were only 3 other small pups in the run with us. The large dog run next door (for pups over 23 lbs) had a bigger crowd.

Best of all, the development of this area of Hudson River Park now gives us a longer and very beautiful walkway along the water. After our visit to the dog run, we walked north along the water all the way to Riverside Park on the Upper West Side. We’ll be back for sure!

Dogs of New York – Sisu the Afghan Hound | thepupdiary.com

1 Jun

We met Sisu the Afghan Hound at the New Yorkie Runway show this past February where he was crowned Best in Show. These days the handsome pup is helping his mom, Laura Diaz, with her new Yappy Treats Cart doggy frozen yogurt business. The cart debuted in Central Park last weekend to lots of barks and tongue licks. We have sampled the dogfroyo and it is delicious! (And all-natural, too!) Follow @YappyTreatsCart on Twitter to find the cart. They also participate in many special events benefiting shelters and rescue groups including the upcoming Bideawee Take a Sip and Save a Life wine event on June 5 at 67 Wine.

We are happy to introduce you to Sisu!

Where are you from? I was born in Helsinki, Finland

How did you get your name? I was one of twelve in my litter so there was a lot of competition. Because I emerged as the leader of my pack, my dad named me ‘Sisu’. ‘Sisu’ (pronounced Seesoo) is a Finish term often described as integral to understanding the Finnish culture. It has been loosely translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity.

What is your hood? Upper West Side

Fave dog-friendly NY spot? Definitely Amsterdam Ale House. They got the best beer and dog treats. It’s like Cheers, everybody knows my name.

Fave day trip from NY? I love riding in my dad’s truck. It doesn’t matter where we are going, as long as I can rest my muzzle on an open window and inhale.

Do you have any pet peeves? My half brother, Merlin, a crazy Weimaraner. He can be very annoying.

Human peeves? Having to move when my dad is trying to vacuum. Usually I pretend like I am sleeping and have him vacuum around him. Check out “Sisu and the vacuum cleaner” on YouTube to see what I mean!

What do you like to eat? I have a diverse palate when it comes to food; Japanese sushi, Mexican tamales, Thai noodles, etc., but admittedly my vice is pizza.

What do you think of your mom’s new Yappy Treats Cart? I was very happy with my mom making healthy doggie ice cream, until she starting giving it to other dogs. Now I have to guard the cart to make sure no one takes my stash.

If you could break biscuits with any doggy (past or present) who would that be? International Champion Afghan Hound from my kennel, Wild West.

Any famous humans you would like to meet? I have a picture with Jerry Stiller, which is pretty cool. He lives in my hood. No disrespect to Jerry but I have a soft spot for pretty ladies. I would not wash the spot on my head if Catherine Zeta Jones were to pet me.

Birthday suit or dressed to the K-nines? Look, I carry a winter coat all year round. That’s enough for me. But I have my own collection of snoods. I have ones for my favorite sports teams, but I like my Harley Davidson snood the best. I also have an Angel on A Leash snood for my important work as a therapy dog.

Any new doggy products you can recommend? My mom’s Dogfroyo, of course! I watch her make it and it’s oh!… so good!

What’s in your doggy bag? My hair brush, a snood, and a couple of dollars to buy ice cream.

Favorite doggy charity? I don’t have one but if I had to choose I would give my bones to those Grey Hound rescues. They are way too thin.

Any human charities you like to support? Unicef because it focuses on children and let’s face it, I am a kid trapped in a dog’s body.

What is one thing other pups probably don’t know about you? A lot of pups are intimidated about my size but what they don’t know is that I am really skinny under all this hair. They should see me after a bath.

Upcoming summer plans? Marking the neighborhood, meeting bitches and keeping cool!
