The Sato Project brunch | thepupdiary.com

15 Apr

Mom took the LIRR out to Douglaston Manor this morning to support The Sato Project and their annual brunch fundraising event.  The Sato Project helps rescue abandoned and abused dogs from Puerto Rico.  They mainly work at Dead Dog Beach where they rescue the dogs, fully vet them including spay and neuter, and then fly the pups off the island into forever homes.  Since The Sato Project’s inception in November 2011, they have rehabilitated and adopted an average of 26 dogs per month in the U.S.  One of their little doggies was a special brunch guest.

We love this video that their photographic volunteer, Sophie Gamand, made to show some of the behind the scenes work they do:

The sold-out brunch had flowing mimosas and bellinis, over 75 raffle prizes, New York City skyline views, and lots of dedicated volunteers and supporters.  Our friends from Yorkie 911 Rescue, Celebrity Catwalk, and other groups came out to support.  Designer Anthony Bandit Rubio was there and is working on a special project, Dog Vogue, with Sophie Gamand.

We’re Pup Scouts and you can be one, too | thepupdiary.com

Pup Scouts rule!  BOL!  We are members of Pup Scout Troop 4 through DPFamily.  This is the NYC Chapter and has over 20 members and growing.  There are other chapters around the country.  We get together for doggy fun and community service.  We also wear really cool uniforms and earn badges!  We have the green “Girl Scout” uniforms since green is one of our fave colors.  A lot of our doggy friends wear the tan “Brownie” color.  While out and about today we stumbled upon a Scout retail shop on West 37th Street.  Mom took us in to check out the cool camping gear and badges.  We would love to earn all of those badges . . . so we need to get busy!

New York dogs – your perfect weekend | thepupdiary.com

12 Apr

What makes a perfect doggy weekend in New York City?  We think it includes fun, philanthropy, food, and frolicking!  Our Pup Diary of events includes many doggy (and sometimes human only) events and activities.  Here is how we like to cover our bases!

Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park

FUN:  Art galleries, playgroups, doggy spas, shopping, parks, dog runs, parties . . . and sometimes just snuggling on the couch!  Check the calendar to see many “fun” events you may want to check out!

PHILANTHROPY:  We conduct home visits for Yorkie 911 Rescue.  What does this mean?  We visit potential doggy adopters in their homes to see if they are fit doggy parents.  We meet their current pets and other family members.  (We also get to see lots of cool real estate!) We make several visits a month, but each visit is less than 30 minutes.  This is a very easy way to give back to the doggy community!  Contact your favorite rescue group or shelter and ask how you can sign up.

FOOD: Smorgasburg opened last weekend and we were there!  The Saturday location is not dog friendly . . . but Sunday’s beautiful river setting in the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO does allow pups.  Arrive early because it gets extremely crowded.  Small pups in bags are welcome on the East River Ferry and the Brooklyn Bridge stop is easy walking distance to Smorgasburg.

FROLICKING:  We love to frolic along the Hudson River walking paths.  The river cafe’s are beginning to open their doors now that Spring has sprung!  We love to walk from Chelsea up to The Boat Basin Cafe.  There are several dog-friendly cafe stops along the way!

CNNMoney and our tax refund | thepupdiary.com

12 Apr

CNNMoney wanted to know how we’ll spend our tax refund this year.  They interviewed us a few weeks ago and published the article today ‘How I’m Spending My Tax Refund’.  The title they gave us – Spoiling her dogs – was a bit funny to us.  (Even though we will be co-starring on Spoiled Rotten Pets on Saturday, April 20!)

We are using just about every penny of the money on doggie “stuff”.  Teeth cleaning – about $600 per dog.  Therapy dog certification renewal and annual Gala – $350.  Petplan annual health insurance for two pups – about $1,000.  Trip to Glen Highland Farm doggy rescue camp – $500.  Trip to Wigglebutt Wedding supporting rescue dogs – $300.  So, I guess we are spoiled in some way!  Especially considering some doggies don’t even have warm beds and good food . . .

Meet Fashion Institute of Technology pet product designers | thepupdiary.com

11 Apr

Pet News Now hosted their Home & Garden Pet Product Showcase yesterday at the Roger Smith Hotel on Lexington Avenue in East Midtown.  We got some great product samples that we will check out and review in the next coming week.  We also met the creators of the CritterZone Air Purifier.  Pretty cool since we had previously written a product review and like the product!

We love to support up-and-coming designers, so we were thrilled to meet some of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Pet Product Design and Marketing students and graduates!

Check out this cute Statue of Liberty doggy sweatshirt and coordinating toy from Les Pets en Voyage! Abby Kass designs New York-themed clothing and toys for pets and the people who love them.  The Statue of Liberty shirt will be available later this spring at around $60.
